Dr. Bertram First in CSRA to Implant Intraocular Lens for Myopia

Dr. Bradley Bertram, one of the Eye Guys at Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Augusta, P.C., implanted the first intraocular lens for myopia at the Eye Surgery Center of Augusta on Tuesday, October 19. A media conference with Dr. Bertram and the patient followed on Wednesday, October 20 at 8:30 a.m. at the Eye Physicians and Surgeons Offices. It is the first procedure of its kind to be performed in the region.

"I feel honored to introduce this innovative treatment to this area," Bertram said, "and look forward to being able to offer my patients a solution for those who had little hope of better vision before."

Dr. Bertram recently trained and received certification to perform the surgery after the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL lens received FDA approval in September of this year. Only 170 physicians in the United States are trained to perform this procedure.

The new lens is the first lens of its kind to receive FDA approval. It is suitable for the reduction or elimination of nearsightedness in adults with myopia ranging from -5.0 to -20.0 diopters, and in patients 21 and over. It has not been approved for the correction of astigmatism.

Approximately three million people, or 5 to 10 percent of the population, are too nearsighted to have LASIK and are candidates for this procedure. The implantation of the phakic intraocular lens is a reversible procedure.

According to OPHTEC, the manufacturer of the lens, this new procedure enables the lens to attach to the non-reactive, mid-periphery of the iris in a way that does not inhibit the iris' function and allows a safe distance from the natural lens, the cornea and the anterior chamber angle. The procedure is similar to Cataract surgery where the operation is performed on each eye on separate days, a few weeks apart.

The unique, patented lens design was introduced by OPHTEC in Europe more than 17 years ago and has been safely implanted in more than 150,000 eyes worldwide.

Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO) and OPHTEC USA, Inc. are global leaders in the development, manufacturing and marketing of ophthalmic surgical and eye care products including the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL lens. Information about the Verisyse lens and procedure is available at www.visioninfocus.com.

The physicians at Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Augusta, P.C. have been performing laser vision corrections since 1997, and have performed approximately 3500 refractive procedures. In addition, they performed over 2000 cataract surgeries last year alone. The physicians offer a full-service ophthalmic center to provide complete ophthalmologic exams and they have the only VISX STAR S4™ Excimer Laser System in the Augusta area.
