PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is the same procedure as LASIK without creating a flap. This procedure is an option for those who were previously not a candidate for LASIK due to thin corneas or working or playing in an environment where blunt trauma is a possibility. PRK also lessens the possibility of inducing or worsening dry eye syndrome that some encounter after LASIK. The surface epithelium (the thin layer of skin covering the front surface of the cornea) is gently removed. The cornea is then treated with the same laser used in the LASIK procedure and the epithelium regenerates and covers the cornea again over the next four to six days. With PRK you will be able to return to normal activities within four to five days. Your functional vision should return in three to seven days, however the full visual results may not be recognized for three weeks to several months. Once your surgeon has reviewed tests performed on your eyes and discussed your occupation and lifestyle with you, your options will be discussed and recommendations made for the refractive surgery that is best for you. To find out more about this procedure or to schedule an appointment for a free consultation, please call our office at 706-651-2020 or call toll free 1-800-521-6049. |
